This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.Download Now..

Strategic Procurement in Construction

Posted on, 8th August, 2016 by admin

This book explores the appropriateness of procurement strategies in certain situations. It argues that organisations should develop strategically aligned supply chains to deliver predictable and sustained performance improvements and asserts that the assumption that one approach is appropriate to manage all circumstances is flawed. It provides a framework to help organisations develop segmented approaches in the management of their construction supply chains built on 'fit-for-purpose' relationships.Download Now..

Concrete has traditionally been known as a material used widely in the construction of roads, bridges and buildings. Since cost effectiveness has always been one of the more important aspects of design, concrete, when reinforced and/or prestressed, is finding more use in other areas of application such as floating marine structures, storage tanks, nuclear vessel containments and a host of other structures. Because of the demand for concrete to operate under different loading and environmen tal conditions, increasing attention has been paid to study concrete specimens and structure behavior. A subject of major concern is how the localized segregation of the constituents in concrete would affect its global behavior. The degree of nonhomogeneity due to material property and damage. by yielding and/or cracking depends on the size scale and loading rate under consideration. Segregation or clustering of aggregates at the macroscopic level will affect specimen behavior to a larger degree than it would to a large structure such as a dam. Hence, a knowledge of concrete behavior over a wide range of scale is desired. The parameters governing micro-and macro-cracking and the techniques for evaluating and observing the damage in concrete need to be better understood. This volume is intended to be an attempt in this direction. The application of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics to concrete is discussed in several of the chapters.Download Now..

Risk Analysis in Project Management

Posted on, 2nd August, 2016 by admin

This book demystifies risk analysis and enables decision makers to improve the quality of their judgements by providing more realistic information on which to base decisions. With a practical approach, minimising jargon, mathematics and academic references, the author provides practitioners with clear descriptions of the nature of risk and risk attitude. He also describes techniques of analysis and assesses their strengths and weaknesses.Download Now..

Is there anything more important to the success of a project than making good decisions? This skill is certainly at or near the top of the list. Yet, few of us have had formal training in decision making. Decision analysis is the discipline that helps people choose wisely under conditions of uncertainty. This book introduces risk and decision analysis applied to project management. Probability is the language of uncertainty. Fortunately, a few basic concepts in probability and statistics go a long way toward making better decisions. The evaluation calculations are straightforward, and many everyday problems can be solved with a handheld calculator. Schuyler also explains and demystifies key concepts and techniques, including expected value, optimal decision policy, decision trees, the value of information, Monte Carlo simulation, probabilistic techniques, modeling techniques, judgments and biases, utility and multi-criteria decisions, and stochastic variance. Some of Schuyler’s tried-and-true tips include: -The single-point estimate is almost always wrong, so that it is always better to express judgments as ranges. A probability distribution completely expresses someone’s judgment about the likelihood of values within the range. -We often need a single-value cost or other assessment, and the expected value (mean) of the distribution is the only unbiased predictor. Expected value is the probability-weighted average, and this statistical idea is the cornerstone of decision analysis. -Some decisions are easy, perhaps aided by quick decision tree calculations on the back of an envelope. Decision dilemmas typically involve risky outcomes, many factors, and the best alternatives having comparable value. We only need analysis sufficient to confidently identify the best alternative. As soon as you know what to do, stop the analysis! -Be alert to ways to beneficially change project risks. We can often eliminate, avoid, transfer, or mitigate threats in some way. Nonlinear Finite Elements for Continua and Structures Ted Belytschko, Wing Kam Liu, Brian Moran Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois This book provides a comprehensive description of the major methodologies of nonlinear finite element analysis for solid mechanics, as applied to continua and structures. Treatment of the subject is integrated in such a way that the reader can gain an understanding of the fundamental methods, a feeling for the comparative usefulness of different approaches and an appreciation of the difficulties inherent in nonlinear analysis. In-depth coverage of the following is given: * Lagrangian and arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian treatments of continua * many of the material laws used in today's software and research * solution methods, including explicit and implicit time integration methods and methods for equilibrium problems * basic concepts such as stability and smoothness, and techniques such as linearization and regularization * methods for shells and structures * contact-impact problems * element technology, including multi-field elements Ideal for self-study, no other book provides such a comprehensive description of nonlinear finite element analysis for solid mechanics. This is an invaluable reference not only for final year undergraduates, postgraduates, academics and engineers working on sophisticated finite element software and in the field of solid mechanics, but also for all users of nonlinear finite element programs.Download Now..

"... the book is at its best in the design and analysis sections and could stand on these alone as a well-stocked handbook with copious references for further study," commented the Journal of the National Water Council after publication of an earlier edition of Pipeline Design for Water Engineers. This classic monograph has been revised and updated to take account of new developments in the field. Recent research in cavitation and flow control has prompted additional sections to be added. There are also new sections on supports to exposed pipes and secondary stress. Additional references and a new layout make up this edition. Some sections appearing in previous editions, noteably on pipe network systems analysis and optimization have been ommitted as they were considered more appropriate in the author's parallel book ``Pipeflow Analysis'' (Developments in Water Science, 19).Download Now..
